A work in progress and progress at work, if you've landed here
you're an early adopter. Stop back as I add more items of religion, politics,
consumerism, and life as it SHOULD be...
This web site is all about ME and what I think. It's
dedicated to those who either agree with me or see my point but are willing
to challenge it with logical, rational, adult, reasoning. There is a
WebLog where I'll post my
occasional observations and where readers can post comments to my comments.
Here's a list of thoughts, observations, credos, etc. that I hope
you may find thought-provoking, wrath-evoking, inspiring, perhaps humourous,
and so forth. Even if you don't agree, if I made you think and/or laugh,
then I feel good and I appreciate your spending some time here.
The Purpose of a Business is to Provide Needed
Products and Services to the Customer, Providing a Reasonable Profit to the
Operator. Not the other way around.
The purpose of a GOVERNMENT
is not to "govern".
It is to provide for the common needs of the people who PUT IT THERE.
It is to operate the most basic necessities that make life possible at whatever
is considered a reasonable quality. I think that the whole purpose of the
US government has been perverted from that which the authors of the Declaration
of Independence and The Constitution had in mind. The Federal (from the
latin
league or treaty, meaning part of a loose-knit group with common
needs handled by a central authority) government should be handling the
things that the states can't handle (efficiently or fairly) alone like,
regulation of interstate commerce and transportation, regulation of things
for which people from all constituent geopolitical units (e.g. states) will
have an expectation of standards (aircraft and auto safety, pilot certification),
minimum standards of health and food (so a person from one state can expect
the water in another to not give them diarrhea), and (especially) to provide
for the common defense since it's silly to have Rhode Island defend itself
alone against a rogue nuclear state (strength in numbers). The Nevadans
have OK'd prostitution in most counties; I'm surprised the Feds haven't
nixed that!
STATES RIGHTS: Otherwise, this federation was supposed to be a bunch
of loosely associated states with their own laws but people today think the
word Federal means Washington, rather than "that which is confederated".
I think it's just silly to have a theocracy in Utah but, as long as the religious
rights of those of other faiths (or none) are respected, if the majority
in Utah want stores closed on Sunday, let them have it. It's probably a good
thing, in the long run, to have one state where people who want Mormon social
standards to be espoused can live - keeps it from spreading around. The only
conundrum is civil rights. Is
it OK for South Carolina to say that black folks have to use their own "equal
but separate" bathrooms
(and
E.B.S. never WAS equal) when most other states disallow this? I think it's
simply unacceptable (and morally vile) to treat people differently due to
their personal specifics, but should I have the right to make other states
do the same? Tough call.
Sept 09: Originally I had stated "This Federal
Government should not be dictating what consitutes a "marriage".
If people married in Iowa are no longer "married" when they go
to Pennsylvania, they might not want to GO to Pennsylvania." I'm
changing my thinking in this direction because people married in Iowa may have to
go to Pennsylvania - for work, family, etc. Just like I said in the last 2
sentences above, states rights vs human rights might be a tough call but, likewise,
I don't think it's so "tough" any more. I once knew a very socially and politically
far-right man who submitted to me that if South Carolina had been allowed to
keep its racist laws thru the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s, economic
realities (businesses leaving or not arriving, companies not doing business
with their businesses, and tourism dollars being denied) would have forced
them, kicking and screaming, to drop their racist laws. Worked in South Africa.
But how long would it have taken and what about the blacks from well integrated
states who had to go to South Carolina while the racist laws were still
in place? They should have had and should have equal rights and equal
protection under federal law.
I am a sovereign biological unit.
I had no say as to whether I would exist or not; my parents decided that I
would be fun, and that every other couple had a couple replicants, so they
should too. I arrived without signing anything so nobody can hold me to any
rules regarding my sovereign self. They CAN say, "if you want to
live here you must follow these democratically derived rules".
They CANNOT say "You must believe religiously as we do, you may not kill
yourself, you may not do stupid things like bungee jumping or driving without
a seat belt because you might make yourself vegetative and that's unacceptable
to us". They CAN say "You are responsible for yourself - if you
become brain dead because of a motorcycle accident while using no helmet,
you're signing that license said that you agreed not to become a ward of the
state and so, now, we're pulling the plug."
The item above goes right to my core. We need
personal responsibility in this country. We have the
gummint involved in every little thing; we sue because we're idiots
or because we think we can make some money off an oversight. We buy
property we can't afford and claim we didn't understand the contract.
We give up our precious personal responsibility and sovereignty to the
people who should NOT have it! THE GUMMINT! Who T.F. are they? Stop wheedling
and whining and be an adult. If you make a mistake, make it right. Don't
make MORE laws bringing (any) government into your life, make laws to
make it (them) as tangential as possible. Make
the government an entity that serves YOU and makes YOUR life better by
providing for the basics.
Please think for yourself. Don't let talk show hosts (i.e. entertainers)
do it for you. Since you can't know everything, look things up before you
forward them. Read
this! Please!
Reason
#2 For Condoms (#1 is to prevent the spread
of HIV and other STD's) This very funy ad took 10 minutes to load on
a decent cable modem connection but is well worth it. FWIW, there's NOTHING
in this Quicktime movie having anything to do with sex.
Olympic
Pelvic Powerlifting - the Ukrainian Team : beautifully
done adult humor. An excellent example of how you can allude to something
without ever showing it (and: if you don't know what's being alluded
to you can't be offended!)
Great Minds on Freedom of Speech
"I have always strenuously supported the right of every man to his
own opinion, however different that opinion might be to mine. He who denies
another this right makes a slave of himself to his present opinion, because
he precludes himself the right of changing it."
-- Thomas Paine, 1783
"Free speech exercised both individually and through a free press, is
a necessity in any country where people are themselves free."
-- Theodore Roosevelt, 1918
"The truth is found when men are free to pursue it."
-- Franklin D. Roosevelt, 1936
"If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people
what they do not want to hear."
-- George Orwell, 1945
"Any time we deny any citizen the full exercise of his constitutional
rights, we are weakening our own claim to them."
-- Dwight David Eisenhower, 1963
"What is objectionable, what is dangerous about extremists is not that
they are extreme, but that they are intolerant."
-- Robert F. Kennedy, 1964
"Go fuck yourself."
-- Vice-President Dick Cheney, 2004
